STEM Lab / Project - Water Surface Tension
In this STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) lab, you’ll be swimming in science as you try to break water’s surface tension and send magical critters sailing away! Students learn about surfactants and how they affect water tension by adding different liquids to one of six floating paper critters to see if they can make the critter move.
Check out our Getting Nerdy Blog Post showing the critters in action!
This lab is open ended, providing teachers the ability to choose how to conduct the activity. Students can work in groups, independently, or as a whole class. Students will collect data on distance, time, and calculate speed. They then create a graph under their teacher's instruction and analyze their data with extension questions. Answer key is not included because YOU decide how to best test the surfactants and critters. However, background information is provided to easily answer questions.
